The KLR Making an Impact team is devoted to helping our communities whenever we are able.

After all, “a moment of kindness has the power to change lives in ways we may never know.” Community service has always been ingrained in our company spirit, and is a value KLR was founded upon. Just take it from our managing director, Alan Litwin.

Alan grew up just three blocks from where he would eventually co-found an accounting firm with his partner, Larry Kahn. Looking back on his years in Providence, Alan says he has always felt a strong connection to the community, something that was instilled in him at a very young age. “My parents were community stewards and taught me that one of the most important things in life is to give back,” Alan shares.

Where it all began

Alan started volunteering at the Miriam Hospital when he was just 15 years old, and has since become a Miriam Life trustee and 2019 Person of the Year.

Alan has committed himself to the hospital and its patients, devoting 47 years of his time and leadership to help advance critical initiatives. One significant initiative Alan chaired, “The Miriam’s Advancing Emergency and Cardiac Care: The Miriam’s Campaign for Excellence,” resulted in a complete renovation of Miriam’s emergency department.

“It’s been amazing and gratifying to see the Miriam Hospital flourish,” Alan says.

Alan focuses his charitable efforts primarily on healthcare and education, sharing that it’s important to volunteer in something you are passionate about. “It quickly comes off as disingenuous if you do not have a passion for your volunteer work,” Alan shares.

Giving back

As father to Madison and David and a former little league baseball and basketball coach, Alan has been devoted to bettering children and youth in his community as well. Alan’s passion for bettering education led him to take on the role of The Wheeler School Board Chair, a position he held for five years. During Alan’s time at Wheeler, he was able to contribute to a complete transformation of Wheeler’s physical campus, which allowed kids opportunities that they wouldn’t have had otherwise.

Alan’s dedication to bettering Providence has earned him much recognition, but that’s not what he values. “Being able to do my part to better my community is a priceless feeling,” Alan shares, “I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”

As KLR grows and changes with the times, we know that one thing will never change—and that’s our commitment to being engaged and bettering our communities.
