Corporations Must Certify Tax Status by April 1st

March 22, 2016

In order to claim exemption from personal property tax, corporations must complete an online certification process by April 1st.

April 1st marks the deadline for corporations or other business entities that are taxable as corporations to claim exemption from personal property tax. Once qualifying entities certify their tax status, they will be included in the “Corporations Book” which is used by local assessors to determine which businesses are entitled to a variety of property tax exemptions.

How do I claim the exemption?

Certifying is very simple and can be done right on MassTaxConnect.

To complete the process:

  1. Click on “I want to…” (No need to log in)
  2. Go to “Submit Annual Certification of Entity Tax Status” (There are FAQs featured under “Quick Links” at MassTaxConnect homepage if you need assistance)
  3. Wait for a reply from MassTaxConnect containing;
  • A Certification Confirmation Code- This is used to review your request from the MassTaxConnect landing page when you click on “Find a Request” at the bottom of the screen. Keep in mind that you have to enter the email address you used when completing the application and the code provided in the reply email.
  • A Certification Confirmation Number- This is used on your personal property return which is filed with the assessors of the city/town where the property is located. The number is entered in Section 1-D of the return.

Are any corporate entities not required to complete this process?

There are a few entities that are not required to complete the certification process. These are:

  • Not-for-Profit Corporations
  • Entities that, as of January 1st, do not own real or personal property in Massachusetts
  • Sole Proprietors

Visit the DOR website for additional information. There are also a set of frequently asked questions that might be of use to you as you complete the application.
