2021 Tax Deadlines

A number of tax deadlines changed in 2021. Here's an overview of the most important upcoming tax deadlines for both businesses and individuals.

Individual Tax Deadlines
January 15, 2021Pay fourth installment of 2020 estimated taxes
February 1, 2021W-2 deadline for household employers
February 15, 2021If applicable, file Form W-4 with your employer to claim exemption from federal income tax withholding for 2021
April 15, 2021File (or extend) your 2020 income tax return
April 15, 2021Pay first installment of 2021 estimated taxes
April 15, 2021Pay taxes for employing household workers in 2020
April 15, 2021Contribute to traditional IRAs or Roth IRAs for 2020. Contribute to SEPs and other self-employed non-IRA retirement plans for 2020 (unless you file an extension for your personal return).
April 15, 2021File FBARs for 2020. If you miss the deadline for 2020 FBARs, it will automatically be extended until October 15, 2021.
April 15, 2021File (or extend) 2020 gift tax returns
April 15, 2021File (or extend) 2020 income tax returns for estates and trusts with December 31 year ends.
June 15, 2021

File (or extend) your 2020 income tax return if you live outside the U.S.

Business Tax Deadlines
February 1, 2021Send W-2Gs, 1098s and 1099s to recipients for 2020. File 1099-NECs that report non-employee compensation for 2020.
February 1, 2021Send 2020 W-2s to employees. File 2020 W-2s and W-3 transmittals with SSA.
February 1, 2021Report Q4 2020 income tax withholding and FICA taxes, file an annual return of FUTA taxes and pay any tax due.
February 1, 2021ALEs only: Send Forms 1095-C to full-time employees. All other employers, provide Forms 1095-B to responsible individuals.
February 10, 2021If you deposited on time and in full all taxes due, report Q4 2020 income tax withholding and FICA taxes and file annual return of FUTA tax.
February 28, 2021Paper filers only- For ALEs, file Forms 1094-C and 1095-C. All other employers—file Forms 1094-B and 1095-B.
March 15, 2021Calendar year pass-through entities: File (or extend) 2020 income tax return and pay any tax due.
March 31, 2021Electronic filers only: ALEs only, file forms 1094-C and 1095-C. All other employers, file forms 1094-B and 1095-B.
March 31, 2021Electronic filers only: File healthcare forms and W-2Gs, 1096s, 1098s and 1099s (except 1099-MISCs that report non-employee compensation) for 2020.
April 15, 2021Calendar-year C corporations: File (or extend) 2020 income tax return and pay any tax due.
April 15, 2021Calendar-year corporations: Pay first installment of 2020 estimated income taxes.
April 30, 2021Report Q1 2020 income tax withholding and FICA taxes; pay any tax due (If you deposited on time and in full all taxes due, you have until May 10).
May 17, 2021Exempt organizations: File (or extend) 2020 calendar-year information return and pay any tax due on unrelated business income.
June 15, 2021Calendar-year corporations: Pay second installment of 2020 estimated income taxes.
July 31, 2021Retirement plan sponsors: File (or extend) 2020 calendar-year retirement plan report.
August 2, 2021Report Q2 2020 income tax withholding FICA taxes; pay any tax due. (If you deposited on time and in full all taxes due, you have until August 12).
September 15, 2021Calendar-year corporations: Pay third installment of 2020 estimated income taxes.
September 15, 2021Calendar-year pass-through entities: File 2018 income tax return and send K-1s to owners, if extended. Pay any tax, interest, and penalties due.
September 15, 2021Calendar-year pass-through entities: Make 2020 contributions to certain employer-sponsored retirement plans, if income tax returns were extended.
October 1, 2021Establish a SIMPLE or a Safe-Harbor 401(k) for 2020, except those with a December 31 deadline.
October 15, 2021Retirement plan sponsors: File 2020 calendar year retirement plan report (form 5500) if extended.
October 15, 2021Calendar-year C corporations: Make 2020 contributions to certain employer-sponsored retirement plans if income tax returns were extended.
October 15, 2021Calendar-year C corporations: File 2020 income tax returns and pay any tax, interest, and penalties due, if extended.
November 1, 2021Report Q3 2020 income tax withholding and FICA taxes; pay any tax due (if you deposited ono time and in full all taxes due, you have until November 12.)
November 15, 2021Exempt Organizations: File 2020 calendar-year information return, if extended. Pay any tax, interest, and penalties due.
December 15, 2021Calendar-year corporations: Pay fourth installment of 2020 estimated income taxes.
December 31, 2021Establish retirement plan for 2020, except for a SIMPLE, a Safe-Harbor 401(k) or a SEP.
